Very few of Bach's compositions have resisted musicological exegesis and refused to yield the secret of their origins, existence and destination. This is however the case for thosepieces which are generally put into the rather marginalcategory of 'works for lute'. Hastily assembled at the end of the nineteenth century by Alfred Dörffel, they appeared for the first time among the miscellanies for clavie which made up the forty- fifth volume of the old 'Bach-Gesellschaft' edition. These surroundings hardly helped to clear up the delicate problem of Bach's relationship with the lute. A closer scrutiny of the works will enable us to tackle the much-debated problem of their destination. But Hopkinson Smith's recording seems to relegate this problem to a position of secondary importance with its eloquent answer to the question: Did Bach ever compose for the lute?
